O Departamento de Física da UFPE promove, na próxima sexta-feira (7), às 16h, o colóquio “Design of radiation Field and optical properties of matter”, com o pesquisador Kazuaki Sakoda, do National Institute for Materials Science (Tsukuba-Japão). O evento é aberto ao público e ocorrerá no auditório do Departamento de Física, no Centro de Ciências Exatas e da Natureza (CCEN) da UFPE.

Resumo

The discovery of the fact that the optical properties of matter can be modified by the control of the radiation (electromagnetic) field is one of the most important achievements of modern optics. In this colloquium, the principle and applications of such modifications of optical properties are explained for photonic crystals, plasmonic micro-cavities, and metamaterials. We introduce a quantity called local (photon) density of states, LDOS, which describes the coupling strength between the radiation field and matter. We show that LDOS can be modified by using artificial dielectric and/or metallic nano structures. We can produce a thermal emitter whose spectrum is very different from Planck’s law, for example.
