Postgraduate Program in Production Engineering (Management Engineering)

The Postgraduate Program in Production Engineering (Management Engineering) (PPGEP) of the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE) was formally begun in 1998 and today is among the best in the top two of Brazil. Currently, the Program is rated grade 6 according to the analysis of CAPES - Higher Education Personnel Improvement Coordination. The scale runs from 1 to 7, assuming full marks to courses with high-quality excellence.

Our academic staff and research groups have extensive international connections and interactions with recognized universities around the world, in countries such as England, Portugal, Belgium, and Canada. This special characteristic allows us to offer a range of opportunities for our postgraduate students to study in another country as part of their program.

Graduate Courses

The Graduate Program in Production Engineering is composed of postgraduate courses, seminars, studies and the preparation of a dissertation or thesis. This group of postgraduate courses will consist of compulsory subjects and electives. Compulsory courses are generally basic and are offered by area of concentration, providing unity to the course, while the electives round off the student's training with specialized skills. Courses are by semester, and the semesters are defined by the Collegiate Program. The basic unit for the duration of a course at PPGEP is the credit - a credit corresponds to 15 hours of theoretical or practical classes. Over the first year of the course, the academic master's and doctorate student must take at least 24 credits.

The courses are semestrial, with the first semester starting in March and the second in August. Courses will eventually be offered more intensively during July or January to February, and may even allow for visiting professors. The activities are offered on-site - the student must attend at least 2/3 of the scheduled activities in a subject in order to be able to take the partial and total exams for each class.

 

            Master

Course credits for the Master's program are distributed with 12 (twelve) credits for compulsory subjects and 12 (twelve) for elective courses, giving an overall total of 24 (twenty-four) credits.

The minimum term for completing the Academic Master is 12 months and the maximum is 24 months, starting from the month/ year of initial enrollment as a regular student until the month/ year of the actual defencse of the dissertation.

 

            Doctorate

38 credits are required to obtain a Doctorate degree, spread between compulsory and elective subjects. At the discretion of the Collegiate Program, credits can be used in the master's degree to apply to the necessary credits to the doctorate according to the rules of the course. For the doctorate, the minimum term is 24 months and the maximum is 48 months, starting from the month/ year of the initial enrollment as a regular student until the month/ year of the actual defencse of the thesis.

Distribution for course credits are: 16 for compulsory subjects and 22 for elective courses, amounting to an overall total of 38 credits.       

Each doctorate student is assigned a Monitoring Committee (CA) that will be instituted by the Collegiate within a maximum period of 6 months after the student begins the course. The Committee's primary mission will be to continuously monitor the student's program of studies.

Approval will be required through a Qualification Exam and additional examinations for the PhDoctorate, developed by the CA. Complementary examinations include an evaluation in the Study I and II subjects, which consist of the presentation and defencse of an article accepted to a journal indexed, the first submitted to the journal at a minimum period of 12 months and a maximum of 36 months with the second submitted to the journal at a minimum period of 12 months and a maximum of 42 months.

The following list includes additional complementary exams: (I) thesis project exam in which the student defends the status quo (which the student must master) and details regarding their thesis project (which must be explicitly specified) and (ii) an English language proficiency examination, carried out through either an IELTS or TOEFL test. The minimum performance required in the program is 5.0 points for the IELTS, or 64 points for the TOEFL. The test result must be delivered within a maximum period of two years, commencing as of the month/year of the initial enrolment as a regular student.

The Ph.D. Qualification Examination assesses the student's knowledge of a topic among five (5) topics involving the subjects related to the compulsory subjects in the Program. These topics are generally released to the student 2 months in advance. The qualification examination will be held in a minimum period of 12 months and a maximum of 18 months. The candidate who obtains a grade higher than 7 (seven) will be considered approved. If the student fails the qualification examination, that student may attempt to take a new exam once the 6-month period has elapsed. In the event of a subsequent failing grade, the student will released from the program.

• Reliability, Maintenance and Risks in Production Systems

Involves aspects of reliability, maintenance engineering, evaluation of the performance of systems; and planning and management of technological risks and of losses in production associated with fire engineering.  

• Information Management

Involves studies and methodological applications in organizations, covering the planning and management of Information.  

• Optimization of Systems and Processes

Involves the methodological development and application of operational research, especially mathematical programming, probabilistic systems, statistical methods, decision analysis, game theory and multicriteria decision aid.  

• Planning and Management of Competitiveness

Involves production system planning and management, the Toyota production system, quality and productivity, cost management, economic engineering, planning of projects, management and environmental policy, management of innovation, competitiveness of the production systems of goods and services, ergonomics and usability.

• Information and Decision Systems

Develops studies and methodological applications in organizations, involving the planning and management of Information Systems, the conception and projects of decision support systems and multicriteria decision support models in systems for the production of goods and services. These are directed towards the competitiveness of these systems, addressing their strategy, management and quality.

The Center for Decision Systems and Information Development - CDSID is related to the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), in Brazil. The Center started its activities as a research group in 1987, yielding the status of consolidated research group in 1996 by CNPq (the Brazilian Research Council).The Center engages in interactions with several organizations, by means of contracts and agreements that receive institutional support from research associations, foundations and private companies. The main focus is on the development of new multicriteria methods and multicriteria models for decision support in several contexts of applications. The Center is very active in applied research. Most of its members have achieved the recognition for their productivity in research from CNPq.

CEERMA is a multi-disciplinary research and development centre at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) with the support of professionals from the departments of Production Engineering, Oceanography, Mechanical Engineering, Statistics, Civil Engineering, Well Engineering, the Environment and others. CEERMA's mission is to: 1) Develop scientific advances in the areas of Risk Analysis, Process Security, Reliability Engineering and Environmental Modelling, and; 2) Train human capital (professors and engineers) to work in universities and industries throughout Brazil.

GPSID’s activities are focused on the development and application of Models and Methodologies in the areas of: Planning, Business Process Management, Project Management, Information Management, Multicriteria Decision Support Systems, Outsourcing and Contracting Services, Strategy, Management and Competitiveness of Entrepreneurship, Quality and Reliability and Maintenance Engineering, Technological Risk Management and Performance Evaluation. GREEFO performs research on risk analysis, decisions in economic engineering and the financial field, and optimization with applications in different contexts. Some of the topics covered are decision analysis, uncertainty and imprecision representations, credit analysis, collection operations management and portfolios analysis are also considered.

The DNW develops studies and models of information and decision making systems to support the decision making process in issues involving availability, demands, conflicts of water use, methodologies for mitigation, remediation and combattingcombatting the degradation of the river basins. It also evaluates strategies for the use and conservation of water in urban environments in an effort to provide adequate and sustainable solutions for the environment. It develops practical and theoretical knowledge in modern techniques of group decision-making and negotiation skills, seeking to improve and expand social participation in decision-making processes.

PLANASP - Research Group on the Planning and Analysis of Goods and Services Production

Coordination: Prof. Denise Dumke de Medeiros

Researches performed by PLANASP are linked to the production and service areas in accordance with the current PPGEP/ UFPE research topics. The group's primary objective is to conduct research in the group's areas of activity with the purpose of providing improvements in the productive systems of businesses. Along with Production Engineering, the main research projects developed at PLANASP are based on the following specialties: Environmental Management; Economic Management; Human resource Management; Quality Planning and Quality Management; Production Planning; Systems for Supporting Decision Making. The PMD operates in the management of projects and portfolios, devising research and models to improve project performance in organizations, as well as research related to project maturity, project managers' skills, cultural impact on project management, contract management in projects and project risk management.

RANDOM - The Research Group on Risk and analysis of Decisions in Operations and Maintenance was created in order to gather different researchers with common research interests in the areas of risk and modelling in maintenance and operations. This group has already had significant achievements primarily concerning articles in periodicals and in congresses related to the operational areas of the group.
